So why did it take so long for one to hit shelves? As “Star Wars Outlaws” creative director Julian Gerighty tells Variety, the simple fact is that games are hard to make. “Believe it or not, making games is ambitious.

Star Wars Outlaws is the hotly anticipated open-world game fans of the franchise have been begging for for years, and its creative director has revealed his biggest inspiration for the game came from Sony’s Ghost of Tsushima.In an interview with GamesRadar+, creative director Julian Gerighty said, “It’s super interesting because my biggest reference was Ghost of Tsushima, which is more on the Kurosawa side of inspiration than the Western, the John Ford side of the inspiration for George Lucas.”Star Wars is clearly inspired by Westerns, and Westerns themselves are often inspired by Samurai movies and vice versa, so it’s interesting to see how all these references will be at play within Star Wars Outlaws. Akira Kurosawa, a filmmaker who inspired the aesthetic of Ghost of Tsushima, even studied the work of John Ford.“Red Dead Redemption is phenomenal, [because it treats] the world as a world – not as a checklist of activities that are repeated often,” said Gerighty.

Star Wars Outlaws is largely influenced by the practicalities of movie-making in the 1970s, as well as the series’ iconic “visual language of reduction”.Revealed in the Xbox Games Showcase last month, Star Wars Outlaws is “set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi”. Not only are the narrative and characters rooted in the original movie trilogy, but the creative director Julian Gerighty has said that everything that the player sees in the game will feel like it’s been lifted from one of the sets.In an interview with EDGE Magazine, Gerighty shared that Ubisoft Massive took the time to develop technology that “emulates some of the lenses of the ’70s” to create a grainy and gritty Star Wars game.“So you have the vignetting, film grain, lens breathing, the curvature of a thicker lens, the slight lens flares – all of these things that are very subtle, but come together to give you a more cinematic experience,” explained Gerighty.Expectedly, these effects are likely to be optional so that players are able to switch settings.
