Anything’s Possible (★★★☆☆) conjures a sweet romance between high school seniors Kelsa (Eva Reign) and Khal (Abubakr Ali). The film doesn’t radically shake up the modern romantic-comedy formula, except by centering this teenage love story around a teen who happens to be trans.Played with verve and confidence by newcomer Reign, Kelsa is enjoying life as a smart, fashionable, relatively well-adjusted, and socially stable cool girl at Pittsurgh’s River Point High.Whatever major issues or anxieties she’s dealing with, she generally channels into the video diary that she posts online, but keeps from her exceptionally supportive — and protective — mom Selene (Tony-winner Renée Elise Goldsberry).The movie reveals early on that Kelsa’s handsome classmate Khal isn’t just crushing on her, but also has watched her videos, apparently in a sincere effort to better understand her experience.

Peter Debruge Chief Film CriticKelsa, the protagonist of Billy Porter’s “Anything’s Possible,” played by Eva Reign, has already dealt with most of the tough obstacles to claiming her identity as a trans girl: She admitted it to herself, she told her mom (a ferociously supportive Renée Elise Goldsberry), she took the blockers and the hormones, and she went back to the same school where people had previously known her as a boy. She doesn’t like it when people call her “brave” (which is what her new name means, incidentally), but she had to be to do all that.Now Kelsa just wants to blend in and be an “average” girl, even if the film she carries is a sparkling celebration of in-your-face individuality. The truth is, Kelsa’s denying herself a huge part of the average high school experience by avoiding things — like falling in love — that she anticipates being unusually complicated for someone in her position.

Billy Porter has always been a trailblazer. He won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for “Kinky Boots.” He’s the first gay black man to be nominated and win a Primetime Emmy in any top category for his role in “Pose” (a role that also nabbed him three Golden Globe noms).

The 33rd annual GLAAD Media Awards took place in New York City tonight celebrating LGBTQ+ excellence in Hollywood. Honorees include FX’s Pose and Lil Nas X. The event is a continuation of the Los Angeles celebration that took place on April 2.
