Big holiday ticket prices, bonus performances and large audiences spurred a hefty surge of nearly 50% in Broadway box office last week (ending Jan. 1) over the previous week, with productions including Funny Girl, MJ, Six, Beetlejuice and & Juliet among the shows smashing house records.

Merrily We Roll Along, the Sondheim musical revival starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, was Broadway‘s sole sell-out last week, filling every last seat at the Hudson Theatre with an eye-popping average ticket price of $234.40.

Broadway box office held fairly steady heading into trick or treat season, with receipts for the week ending Oct. 29 at $26,480,578 (about 6% down from the previous week) and attendance at 218,581 (a slip of just 3%).

Air-conditioned Broadway held its own as New York City plunged ever deeper into a hot summer last week, with total box office receipts keeping steady at $31,520,593, a tiny increase of 2% over the previous week.

The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical that closed its Broadway run on Sunday after 35 years, went out on a very high note: Box office receipts for the show’s final week hit a best-ever $3,739,934.

The figure marks a 7% increase over the previous week, a jump due in no small part to the stellar performances of such recent arrivals as Funny Girl, Mr. Saturday Night, Plaza Suite and, of course, The Music Man.

Waitress, the Broadway musical featuring music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, has canceled its remaining performances at the Ethel Barrymore theatre, producers announced tonight. The decision was made after new cases of Covid were detected among the company and crew. The production was to have run through January 9.
