Person rushed to hospital after car and tram crash on busy road

Emergency services scrambled to a major Tameside road following a crash involving a car and a tram. Police, fire crews and paramedics were sent out to the scene on Droylsden Road, at the border of Audenshaw and Droylsden, before 9am today (May 10).

Officers closed off part of the road while dealing with the crash, which involved a black Nissan Qashqai and a tram on the Ashton-under-Lyne Metrolink line.

One casualty was taken to hospital by ambulance, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) says. No trams were able to run between the Ashton and Velopark stops for more than an hour following the smash.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: “At 9am on Wednesday, May 10, firefighters were called out to a road traffic collision involving a tram and a car on Droylsden Road, Audenshaw. READ MORE: Join the FREE Manchester Evening News WhatsApp community "Two fire engines from Philips Park and Ashton-under-Lyne - as well as a Technical Response Unit from Leigh - attended the scene and assisted one casualty from the vehicle who was then left in the care of North West Ambulance Service. "Crews were detained 20 minutes.” It's understood no arrests have been made following the collision.
