Phil Foden is one of the best players Pep Guardiola as ever seen attacking a defence, and showed those qualities against Newcastle.
Foden wasn't at his best in City's Super Cup win over Sevilla this week as he got the nod to play at number ten amid Kevin De Bruyne's absence, but was much better against Newcastle as he was supported by Julian Alvarez at the top of midfield.
Foden provided the assist for Alvarez to score the game's winning goal. And after brushing off questions about Foden's chances of taking De Bruyne's place in the City squad in the coming months, Guardiola was full of praise for his forward after a Man of the Match performance.
However, Guardiola also said that Alvarez and Mateo Kovacic are capable of playing in an attacking midfield role, before challenging Foden to continue building on his progress this week.
