Mobile and broadband prices are set to rise by around 8 per cent next month, even for those mid-contract with their provider.
Consumer champion Martin Lewis raised the alarm earlier this year and again during a special post-Budget edition of his Money Show Live programme on STV last week.
The founder of MoneySavingExpert.com urged people with providers including BT, EE, Virgin Media, Talk Talk and O2 to get onto a comparison website and find a cheaper deal before the price hikes start in April.
However, he also warned that around 4 million people on benefits, including Universal Credit, could be eligible for a social broadband tariff either with their current provider or by switching to another.
