People claiming disability benefits are set for a significant increase next April following the announcement from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) that September’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate was 6.7 per cent.

Consumer champion Martin Lewis explained in his latest BBC radio 5 Live Podcast that by law, disability benefits, incapacity benefits and Carer’s Allowance usually rise by the September CPI figure.

He explained: “There are things like disability benefits, incapacity benefits and Carer’s Allowance, which by law, rise each year in line with September’s CPI inflation.

So they will be going up unless Parliament changes the law of course, but that is unlikely to happen.”This means people on benefits including Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Attendance Allowance and Adult or Child Disability Payment will see their current payments rise by 6.7 per cent next April. The September CPI figure is important as it forms part of the Triple Lock, which makes sure that the State Pension doesn’t lose value over time and guarantees that each year it rises by the highest of these three measures:Under the policy, people on the State Pension will see their payments rise by the earnings growth measure, however, there has been much speculation that the UK Government may use the lower figure of 7.8 per cent.
