Christmas lovers around the world have been left baffled after finding out the true purpose of nutcrackers.The traditional wooden figures are commonplace in many homes around the festive season, having first been commercially created back in 1872 by a German woodworker.A couple of years later, the famous Nutcracker ballet was created with a score by composer Tchaikovsky, which has a strong link to the wooden creations.

Although they're one of the most recognisable Christmas symbols, it turns out a lot of people don't actually know that they have a purpose.The Mirror reports that as well as looking nice and festive, they are in fact used for something - which might seem obvious to a lot of us, but many others didn't have a clue.

As the name suggests, they are used to crack open nuts, which is a revelation that has shocked social media users. Taking to Twitter, people shared their surprise at finding out this festive fact, with one person tweeting: "Nutcrackers are actually used to crack nuts… I was today years old."Another wrote: "You're telling me that nutcrackers can actually crack nuts?' -Me, Thanksgiving 2022,." one person tweeted."NUTCRACKERS ACTUALLY CRACK NUTS?!

WTF SINCE WHEN," shouted a third. Elsewhere, TikTokkers were also apparently just finding this out, with one creator Dave saying: "I was today years old when I found out Nutcrackers crack nuts.""Wait til you find out what a juicer does," came one of the replies, while someone asked: "Where have you been?????"Some people were equally confused as to how certain individuals had lived their lives without knowing this "obvious" piece of information, and poked fun at how oblivious they were.
