Crooks using the Covid-19 pandemic to scam elderly people have targeted a Sunday People reader. Lots of scams linked to the coronavirus have been doing the rounds, but the one told to me this week by George is by far the worst and is extremely alarming.
George, 82, lives alone in a bungalow in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. On Friday, May 1, he received a visit from a man purporting to be from “the electricity board”.
He said there had been a “surge” in the local electricity supply and that he needed to carry out a two-minute check within every house in the street.
George thought it was genuine – in fact, he told me that he didn’t give it a second thought – and let the man into his home.
