Crooks using the Covid-19 pandemic to scam elderly people have targeted a Sunday People reader. Lots of scams linked to the ­ coronavirus have been doing the rounds, but the one told to me this week by George is by far the worst and is extremely alarming.

George, 82, lives alone in a ­bungalow in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. On Friday, May 1, he received a visit from a man purporting to be from “the electricity board”.

He said there had been a “surge” in the local electricity supply and that he needed to carry out a two-minute check within every house in the street.

George thought it was genuine – in fact, he told me that he didn’t give it a second thought – and let the man into his home.
