Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes (born 8 September 1994) is a Portuguese footballer who plays for Primeira Liga club Sporting CP and the Portugal national team as a midfielder. Fernandes started his career at Serie B side Novara Calcio and soon featured for Udinese and Sampdoria in Serie A.
In 2017, he signed with Sporting CP where he established himself as one of the best players in the Primeira Liga. He was named the LPFP Primeira Liga Player of the Year in both 2017–18 and 2018–19. In the latter season, he also helped Sporting win the Taça de Portugal. A senior international since 2017, Fernandes represented Portugal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Paul Scholes has revealed that he never wants to see Erik ten Hag play Bruno Fernandes on the wing again after the Portugal international put in a stellar showing in his natural central position in Manchester United’s 4-1 Europa League win over Real Betis.
The vice-captain was criticised for his display in Sunday’s 7-0 rout at Anfield against Liverpool, where he played on the left flank, with some questioning whether he should continue with the armband.
The playmaker responded with a goal and an assist against Betis and was instrumental throughout the 90 minutes while operating in a central attacking position.
Scholes noted his quality performance and made sure to praise his output. He also called on Ten Hag to refrain from putting Fernandes out on the wing again.
