EXCLUSIVE: After being the lead director on critically acclaimed shows like ZeroZeroZero and Echo 3, Pablo Trapero is getting his first major studio gig as 20th Century has tapped him to direct an adaptation of The Tourist.
Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing the pic. Based on the acclaimed series of books by Olen Steinhauer, the first in the series was released in 2009 and quickly became a New York Times Best-Seller.
The story follows Milo Weaver who is an agent in the secret branch of the CIA that specializes in black ops with the code name “The Tourists.” The series would end up producing three sequels with Hollywood also in hot pursuit of the series with George Clooney at one point circling the rights.
20th Century now sees this as a potential franchise and fits right into Trapero’s wheelhouse with ZeroZeroZero and Echo 3 earning rave reviews for their tense action scenes where special ops scenarios are front and center.
