Over 800,000 families could be in for an electricity bill shocker if they fail to take action by the end of March 2024.Electricity supply experts at Elexon have revealed that hundreds of thousands of households across the UK are still relying on old-fashioned Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meters.

These meters are set to stop functioning after March 31 next year as the service is switched off. The service was originally supposed to be shut off in 2014.

However, energy suppliers have retained it to allow more customers to be moved over to other meters. But figures collected in June this year state that some customers at some of the UK's biggest energy firms - including Scottish Power and E.ON Next - continue on the outdated system.

This means that these households are at risk of losing functionality if meters are not replaced by next April, reports Chronicle Live.
