Over 60,000 Scots children are in line to miss a £100 a month benefit for low income families.Nearly one in five eligible kids could lose out amid fears the Scottish Child Payment is not being promoted enough.Labour MSP Paul O’Kane said: “These payments will be a lifeline to thousands of families, and it would be a scandal for so many people to miss out.“The SNP has talked about the need to tackle poverty – now is the time to match their words with action by working to boost uptake and ensure every child gets the support they are entitled to.”The SCP, a targeted benefit introduced by the Scottish Parliament, is worth £25 a week for every eligible child or £1,300 a year.New figures showed that 303,000 children were receiving it in March, but official forecasts by the Scottish Fiscal Commission reveal take-up issues. In 2023/24, around 370,000 children will be eligible for the payment, but only 309,000 are forecast to benefit from it.The biggest gap is 6-15 year olds, where only 80 per cent of 257,000 children in this age cohort will take it up.By contrast, the take up rate for under 6s is estimated to be 92 per cent this year.Insiders believe the problem is that some parents on low incomes do not know they are eligible. The SFC forecasts modest progress in the take up in the 6-15 bracket next year, with the figure cited being 81%.The “assumptions” document sees the take up rise to 85 per cent by 2029.
