Blackness Castle, which lies near the village of Blackness near Linlithgow, on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, was built in the 15th-century.Known as a garrison fortress and state prison it has a rich (and often violent) history.Dubbed 'the ship that never sailed' due to its unique angular shape which juts out into the Forth, it's recently become better known for its roles on film and TV.Appearing in the films like The Bruce and Doomsday, and the TV show Ivanhoe, its perhaps most famous for its role in Outlander.Doubling as Fort William in season one, the castle formed the backdrop for the pivotal scene in which Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) is.
