The family of an 18-year-old British teenager detained in Dubai over a holiday romance with a 17-year-old girl has described their efforts to secure his release as a harrowing "emotional battle".

Marcus Fakana’s parents have made a heartfelt appeal to HH Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, to allow their son to return home.

Marcus was arrested after being accused of having a sexual relationship with the girl, who is also British, during a family holiday in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

He is currently awaiting trial, set to begin next month. In a recent statement, his family expressed their anguish: "We are praying for the day we can reunite with Marcus." His parents, from Tottenham in north London, revealed they have sought help from Foreign Secretary David Lammy, urging him to ensure Marcus’s rights are protected.
