The Tokyo Olympics will officially start later today, as the most unusual Summer Games in history begin. A year later than originally scheduled, coronavirus is still playing a huge part in the event with no fans permitted at any events.
The opening ceremony will take place at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium, which has a capacity of 68,000 - although just 1,000 VIPs will be in attendance for the traditional opening of the Games.
Japan’s Emperor Naruhito will officially declare the Olympics open, in what will be a stripped back version of the usual festivities.
Hannah Mills and Mohamed Sbihi have been selected as joint flag bearers for today’s ceremony, which is set to begin at 12pm UK time.
