Jimmy Kimmel left Oscar viewers rather shocked with his opening monologue. The 56 year old comedian, who is hosting this year's Academy Awards, had warned earlier in the week that nothing was "off limits", which he proved by making a joke about Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr's past struggles with substance abuse. As the cameras switched to Robert's reaction, the MCU icon tapped the tip of his nose, leading Jimmy to ask: "Was that too on the nose or was that a drug motion you made?" Taking the joke in stride, Robert began performing some charades after a moment of hesitation.
Sensing the tension, Jimmy quickly moved on to compliment the actor, saying: "Look at this guy, he's so handsome, so talented." But things took another turn when Jimmy asked: "Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very rectangular penis?" Robert was left speechless and the remark and simply shrugged when the cameras returned to him.
In the ITV coverage of the ceremony, fellow comedian Jonathan Ross argued that Jimmy's joke was the "bum moment" of the speech.
