variety.comJack Dunn As one of the most unpredictable award seasons in history comes to a close, the biggest stars of 2025 walk the red carpet Sunday at the 97th annual Academy Awards at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.“Emilia Pérez” leads with 13 nominations, setting the record for most nods by a non-English language film.
But what once was a safe bet for several of Oscar’s most coveted categories has become an Academy pariah after offensive tweets from the film’s star Karla Sofía Gascón resurfaced.
The film will compete for best picture against “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” “I’m Still Here,” “Nickel Boys,” “The Substance” and “Wicked.”One of the tightest races this year is going down in the best actress category between “Anora’s” Mikey Madison and “The Substance’s” Demi Moore.
Moore was the early favorite, emphasized by a Golden Globe and SAG Award win. However, Madison has emerged as a worthy contender, bolstered by her BAFTA victory and “Anora’s” success at the DGA and PGA Awards.
