Barrier breaking actress Cicely Tyson has sadly passed away at the age of 96. Tyson blazed a trail for women of colour, first as a fashion model and then as an award-winning actress in a career that spanned seven decades.
Her cause of death has not been revealed but her manager Larry Thompson confirmed that she had died ‘peacefully.’ Cicely is best remembered for her portrayal as the lead in the civil rights-themed film The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman which earned her two Emmy wins.
She also starred more recently in The Help and How To Get Away With Murder. The actress was also the first black woman to front a TV series in the 60s drama East Side/West Side.
