The world's very first single-dose coronavirus vaccine for emergency use "is a pivotal step toward". Johnson & Johnson have asked US regulators for its jab to be approved in a bid to "putting an end to the pandemic".
The drug manufacturer submitted its application to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday. If it is given the green light it will be the third vaccine in the US to be approved.
Covid vaccines manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have been cleared in the US but unlike the Johnson & Johnson jab they either need a second shot or need to be shipped frozen.
The UK has secured 30 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson jab to roll out if approved by regulators, with the option of millions more.
