Ofcom, the telecoms regulator, has put forward a series of new regulations that would require mobile phone companies to inform customers when they are using potentially costly texts, data, and calls while abroad.
Although many mobile operators already do this, Ofcom plans to make it mandatory for them to send text messages to customers when they travel overseas.
Research commissioned by Ofcom revealed that 19% of holidaymakers are unaware that they may incur additional charges if they use their phones abroad.
However, a significant majority of travellers, 94%, claim to be aware of roaming alerts, with 84% stating that they read them upon receipt.
