A nursery worker cried in court before admitting to racially abusing a police officer during riots in Southport. Ellie Clarke, 21, hung her head in shame at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday.

The child worker was seen "at the front of the mob" when violence erupted in the town following the fatal stabbings of six six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe and nine-year-old Alice Da Silva Aguiar in July.

The court heard how Clarke was seen at the front of the crowd that gathered in the area of St Luke's Road on the day after the killings.

Rioters hurled missiles towards police officers at the Southport Islamic Society Mosque while chanting "this is our f***ing country", "s***houses", "scumbag b*****ds" and "who the f*** is Allah?".
