The notorious Strangeways prison is currently under lockdown amid claims that inmates have not been allowed to shower or exercise for a number of days.

It is understood that prisoners have been confined to their cells since June 6, with families also prohibited from visiting their loved ones until June 10.

Relatives state that they have been informed by family members inside the Manchester prison that they have not been allowed out of their cells for any reason and are having food brought to their door, Manchester Evening News reports.

One woman, whose son, 19, is currently an inmate at the jail said that he told her that prisoner's mental health was starting to deteriorate and that the mood inside had become "very tense." Speaking to Manchester Evening News, she said: "My son rang me last night to say the prisoner's mental health is deteriorating quite quickly.
