Forecasters have confirmed that a geomagnetic storm is currently in progress, meaning stargazers in the UK could be treated to the colourful light display if they look up towards the sky tonight.
The Met Office said that people in the north and some central parts of the UK could be in with a chance of catching a glimpse of the aurora.
However, cloudy conditions could make it tricky for some. READ MORE: Popular pizza chain set to open another site in the city centre In a tweet, the weather agency said: "A moderate geomagnetic storm currently in progress means there is a chance of aurora sightings across central and northern parts of the UK tonight.
Forecast cloud cover and rain however may limit viewing opportunities." In Manchester, the forecast suggests some clear patches of sky from around midnight before heavier cloud hits the region from around 2am.
