Nikola Katic backed for Rangers redemption as Hadjuk Split insists defender is ready to fight for his place

After a gap of 845 days, Niko Katic was finally back in a Rangers shirt on Saturday. A combination of events that ranged from a global pandemic to a brutal knee injury mean a figure who was fast emerging as a cult hero at Ibrox before Covid brought the shutters down now finds himself back at square one.

The big defender’s 45-minute run-out in a 3-2 training-ground bounce-game win over Partick Thistle was the first time he’d pulled on a blue jersey since a Dingwall duel with Ross County back in March 2020.

But it was also his first opportunity to show new boss Gio van Bronckhorst what he’s made of as he returned from a 12-month loan spell back home in Croatia.

Hadjuk Split boss Valdas Dambrauskas was the man who spent most of last season coaching the 25-year-old. And he reckons van Bronckhorst is getting back a much more-rounded Katic than the one Steven Gerrard farmed out last summer.
