Nicola Sturgeon spotted being driven by husband Peter Murrell in untaxed car

Nicola Sturgeon was driven to the shops by her husband in an untaxed car, according to reports.The former First Minister was photographed getting a lift from Peter Murrell in a Black Peugeot after its tax had run out.Sturgeon and Murrell forgot to renew the car's tax on August 1.

This meant the tax was eight days out of date.The couple admitted they had made a "simple mistake". Aides said the pair had immediately organised to tax the vehicle.

It does not cost anything as it is an electric car. But the UK Government says: “You must tax your vehicle even if you do not have to pay.”It also says that being the registered keeper of an untaxed vehicle constitutes an offence for which a late licensing penalty letter is issued automatically, with an £80 penalty reduced to £40 if paid within 33 days.Sturgeon had been spotted shopping in Edinburgh while Murrell sat in the car.The ex-First Minister leader was seen at Craigleith retail park in Edinburgh in what was a rare recent public appearance with Murrell.

The pair have not been seen much together since their home was raided as part of an investigation into the SNP's finances.Both Sturgeon and Murrell have been arrested and released without charge pending further inquiries as part of Police Scotland's probe.Police are looking into what has happened to £600,000 raised by the party for a second independence referendum.An onlooker in Edinburgh reportedly saw Sturgeon in Boots before heading to the car park.
