People who have been close contact with a coronavirus patient could avoid being forced to self-isolate by taking daily rapid tests.

NHS Test and Trace is piloting a serial testing scheme, where people flagged by contact tracers will be sent seven days of home tests.

Under plans which officials hope could be a game-changer, the person must test themselves daily for a week with a lateral flow device, which can give a result in as little as 30 minutes.

If the result is negative, they can go about their day as normal. If they test positive, the person will then be asked to take a more sensitive swab test to confirm the result.
