The Perthshire farmer said seeing the reliance on food banks and second-hand clothes and furniture in the council estate where he grew up was one of the things that hit him most.
Mr Fairlie grew up in Letham in Perth before going on to be a first generation farmer in Logiealmond. Speaking after his election to the Scottish Parliament, he told the Perthshire Advertiser : “We have still got food banks.
We have still got a climate change swapshop in the housing estate where I grew up. “That used to be businesses. It used to be shops and now what they are doing is giving people second-hand furniture.
