New figures reveal rise in Lanarkshire school leavers going onto positive destination

The number of South Lanarkshire teens leaving school and going to a ‘positive destination’ is above the Scottish average. New figures also reveal a year-on-year rise across the region.In South Lanarkshire, the number rose from 94.8 per cent in 2019/2020 to 96.2 per cent in 2020/2021.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

Positive destinations include higher education, further education, employment, training and personal skills development and voluntary work.

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey welcomed the figures.She told Lanarkshire Live: “I am delighted that over 96 per cent of South Lanarkshire pupils are going on to work, training or further study after leaving local schools.“These South Lanarkshire figures, which are the second highest over the past 12 years, reflect the resilience and hard work of our young people and all who have supported them during the past two turbulent years.“Whether it is investing in tackling the poverty-related attainment gap, free tuition, or introducing the back-to-work Jobs Grant for people aged 16 to 24 – the Scottish Government is supporting young people across Rutherglen and Cambuslang with the transition to post-school life.“Quite
