The new Labour Government has said it expects around three million households to benefit from the Warm Home Discount Scheme this winter.

The scheme is operated by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and provides people on certain benefits with a £150 credit on their electricity bill.

It’s important to be aware that this money is paid directly to the energy provider and not the claimant. Eligibility rules changed in 2022, which means some people may no longer qualify and others might need to apply as they will not receive the discount automatically.Following the recent change to Winter Fuel Payments, where only those over 66 in receipt of Pension Credit will be eligible for the annual lump sum of up to £300, it’s crucial that people check now if they need to claim the Warm Home Discount, especially as Ofgem is expected to increase the price cap on October 1.Eligible households may also be able to get the £150 discount applied to their gas bill instead - if their supplier provides them with both gas and electricity, just contact them once the scheme opens to find out.If you’re a credit customer the £150 will be added to your electricity account and if you’re on Pay As You Go or Prepayment, you’ll be sent a voucher that you can use to top-up your meter.

Below is an overview of the scheme and the rules on eligibility. The dedicated Warm Home Discount Scheme pages on GOV.UK will be updated soon, the information below is intended as a guide and will be updated if any of the details change The list of participating energy suppliers will not be confirmed until October.People in Scotland may also be eligible for the £58.75 Winter Heating Payment which supported over 410,000 low-income households last year or the £151.50
