BT is proposing a new '888' emergency number and app to offer protection to people out walking in the wake of the murder of Sarah Everard, according to reports today.
The Home Office confirmed it had received a proposal letter from BT chief executive Philip Jansen. Home Secretary Priti Patel is said to be backing the initiative.
A Home Office spokeswoman said the letter proposed an emergency number to allow people to have their journeys tracked - and an alert triggered if they do not reach home in time - aimed largely for women.
