A court has heard that a nurse who is accused of killing babies under her care sent a sympathy card to the grieving parents of a baby girl who it is alleged that she took four attempts to kill.

Lucy Letby, 32, allegedly killed seven babies while working in a neo-natal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and 2016.

The nurse is also accused of attempting to kill 10 other babies over the same period. Letby denies all charges. According to the Mirror, prosecutor Nick Johnson KC told jurors at Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday, 12, October, that the death of Child I - who cannot be identified for legal reasons - was an "extreme example even by the standards of this overall case".

He said: "This is a case where we allege Lucy Letby tried four times to kill her. (Child I) was resilient but ultimately at the fourth attempt Lucy Letby succeeded and killed her."Letby is said to have deliberately administered large amounts of air into a baby's stomach through a nasogastric tube - one of various means she allegedly deployed to harm children in her care. The first incident on September 30, 2015 was said to have taken place - days after she allegedly attempted to murder another baby - when Child I struggled to breathe just 30 minutes after Letby was said to have fed her.In the second alleged incident on October 13, the court heard that a night shift colleague recalled Letby was standing in the doorway of a darkened room in the neo-natal unit when the defendant said Child I looked pale in her cot.
