Maddie was just button beanie and still at that stage where every movement of her arms or legs was an echo or tracing of the same movement in her mum’s tummy. “The fridge behind us was (bizarrely) my first ever Xmas gift to Nadia (with whom I was already in the foothills of a relationship about to be blighted by raging addiction) … and then, most troubling is the fact that I can see the strained and enforced smile on the face of a then active alcoholic. “This was me at my most chaotic, out of control and sad.”Mark added: “I knew I had huge reasons to be happy because of our dear dear baby girl - but drink had me in its grip.
