The heartbroken granddaughter of a vulnerable, elderly woman who was attacked in her own bedroom at a care home has spoken of the anguish the ordeal has caused her entire family - and how her grandma has been 'destroyed'.

Jake Astley, 22, attacked and attempted to rape the victim, who has dementia, is partially paralysed and unable to communicate verbally, at the home in Oldham in the early hours of New Year's Day this year.

After pleading guilty to the offences, that saw him break into the residential facility and chase terrified staff with a butter knife before going into the victim's bedroom, Astley was jailed for 10 years and six months at court. Minshull Street Crown Court previously heard that officers who responded to the incident found Astley half-naked in the victim's room and that she was also partially unclothed with her underwear around her ankles.

The victim, who cannot be identified due to the nature of the offence, has now lost 'a significant amount of weight' and has been 'destroyed' by the ordeal, her granddaughter said in a powerful victim impact statement.
