Murder suspect in Stephen Lawrence case convicted of carrying machete near scene

A ­murder suspect in the Stephen Lawrence case was ­convicted of ­carrying a machete near the scene of the racist killing.New information revealed by a BBC documentary disclosed that in 1989 police caught Matthew White with the weapon in Southeast London, near to where Stephen was later stabbed by white youths.White, who died aged 50 in 2021, was named last year as a sixth suspect in the case.

He was arrested twice but never charged due to lack of evidence. Five suspects have previously been publicly named as linked to Stephen’s murder.

Gary Dobson, 47, and David Norris, 46, were jailed for life in 2012, reports the Mirror.Brothers Neil, 47, and Jamie Acourt, 46, have served time for drug dealing.

Luke Knight, 46, has stayed free.But Duwayne Brooks, who was with Stephen at the time, always said there were six attackers, with the leader fair-haired.The terms of reference for a new review of the case are currently being agreed with Stephen’s parents, Baroness Doreen and Dr Neville Lawrence, and Mr Brooks, who was also a victim of the attack.
