Once described as one of Britain's most "outrageous" roads, Hardknott Pass between Eskdale and the Duddon Valley in the Lake District is only the width of a bridleway and is filled with twisting bends.
Whilst it is one of the most direct routes from the central Lakes to West Cumbria, visitors are often encouraged to take hour-long detours to avoid it's hairpin turns, seriously steep incline and "unpredictable" surface.
Despite being one of the steepest roads in England with a gradient of 1 in 3, it's also described as "great fun" - though one family recently had quite the opposite experience.
Locals have many tales of visitors freezing at the challenge, as well as skidding and brake failures on the narrow carriageway, and now a family have described it as 'hell on earth'.
