A woman has been jailed for 10 years after her four young children died in a fire while she left them at home alone. Deveca Rose went to Sainsbury's, leaving her two sets of twins, aged three and four, in the locked terraced house on the evening of December 16 in 2021.

She later arrived home to find firefighters tackling a blaze at her home. The 30-year-old, who the court heard had split up with her partner and suffered from mental health problems, was found guilty of four counts of manslaughter following a trial at the Old Bailey.

On Friday, she was sentenced by Judge Mark Lucraft KC, who told handed her a 10-year jail term. He said it was a “tragic case” in which the four young boys were left by Rose in an “unsafe” house.

He told Rose: “You were not there and the children were too young to know what to do. As a result of what you did, they were all killed.” None of the items Rose had gone to Sainsbury’s to buy that day were “essential or vital”, the court heard, and the children suffered “acute physical suffering” before their deaths, the judge said.
