Gilliard heard the train before she saw it. It was 2014 and she was working as a hair stylist on the set of “Midnight Rider,” a movie about the life of musician Gregg Allman.
Gilliard was standing on a railroad trestle in rural Wayne County, Ga., waiting to primp star William Hurt before director Randall Miller called for action.
Also nearby were camera assistant Sarah Jones, as well as a makeup artist, a boom operator and a wardrobe person.The scene was a dream sequence in which Hurt, as Allman, was in a bed atop the tracks.
The movie’s production company had failed to obtain a permit — which would have diverted oncoming trains — to shoot on the tracks.
