More than 100 people in Renfrewshire sign up to be organisers of non-payment of bills campaign

A campaign calling for non-payment of energy bills is sweeping across the UK and Renfrewshire is no exception, with more than 100 already signing up to help organise for the campaign in the area.The campaign, Don’t Pay UK, is demanding a reduction in the cost of energy bills to an affordable level and if that demand is not met by October 1, and their campaign meets its target of one million pledges, it is advising people to withhold their bill payments.At the time of writing, 96,706 people have pledged that they will join the non-pay movement on October 1 if the critical threshold is met.

So far, 2,769 organisers have signed up in Scotland, 133 of those in Renfrewshire.It comes as analysts are forecasting that the average household bill will jump above £3,300 from October, above £4,200 from January 2023 and £4,400 a year in Spring next year, a rise from £1,971 in April 2022.Management consultancy firm Cornwall Insight said rising wholesale prices and a revision of the methodology used by the regulator Ofgem to calculate the price cap were behind the increase in its forecasts.Coupled with rising inflation, which is set to go above ten per cent this year and stagnating wages, the increasing cost of energy bills is driving people to take action, similar to that seen with demonstrations against the Poll Tax in 1990, which led to the demise of Margaret Thatcher as UK Prime Minister.A statement on the Don’t Pay UK
