An injured hiker who got trapped under a boulder for 12 hours miraculously survived by digging his way out with a tree branch.

While stuck, Jason Koch thought of the James Franco film 127 Hours, which tells the true story of Aron Lee Ralston, who cut off his arm with a dull knife to survive a canyoneering accident.

When he was finally free and able to call for help, the battery life on his phone was just six per cent and he had 11 broken ribs and other serious injuries.
