A 'milestone moment' for women accessing healthcare in Scotland has been marked today as Scottish Greens MSP Gillian Mackay lodged her buffer zones Members’ Bill.
The bill, which will be published on Friday, will create 150 metre safe access zones and would stop anti-abortion campaigners from targeting medical facilities.
It has been backed by the Scottish Government and has already received cross party support during the consultation process.So far, Scotland is the only nation in the UK to have not passed legislation on safe access zones.
Mackay said it was a 'milestone moment' and that it will end the intimidation of patients and staff by anti-abortion protest groups.Ms Mackay said: “This is a milestone moment for my bill and for protecting reproductive rights in Scotland.
