Armed with only BandLab and an iPhone, he started scoring gameplay montages. Early virality encouraged him to think bigger, and by the end of 2022, d4vd had landed global hits with “Romantic Homicide” and “Here With Me” without ever stepping into a recording studio. Both feature on his hotly anticipated debut project “Petals to Thorns,” out today via Darkroom/Interscope Records. Like many teenage boys, D4vd was obsessed with “Fortnite” when it came out in 2017 and he began posting videos on YouTube like his gaming hero Ninja. “I saw the videos he was making and I used the same music,” the 18-year-old recalls. “Only mine would be taken down for copyright infringement.” He complained to his mom, who suggested making his own songs. Inspired, he fired up Google: “I searched how to make music on a phone.”

Jordan Moreau Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” is beginning its box office swim with $10.3million in previews. It opens in 4,320 theaters on Friday. Thursday’s preview haul is the seventh-highest ever for a G- or PG-rated movie. “The Little Mermaid” also picked up $850,000 from Wednesday early access screenings. Starring singer and actor Halle Bailey as Ariel, the new movie is projected to open with $100 million this holiday weekend. With Memorial Day on Monday, its four-day total could land between $120 million and $125 million. “The Little Mermaid” is expected to make a big splash as one of Disney’s more successful live-action remakes. In comparison, Disney’s most recent remake, the 2019 photorealistic and computer animated “The Lion King,” roared with a $191 million opening from $23 million in previews. It went on to make more than $1 billion globally. And just a couple months before “The Lion King” released, the live-action “Aladdin” opened with $117 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend (from $7 million in previews) and also cracked $1 billion worldwide.

You can be sure in “The Wrath of Becky” that age hasn’t dulled her pissed-off homicidal verve, and that fate will surely provide another crop of ne’er-do-wells to tempt its exercise.  However, a different writing-directing duo is in charge this time, Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote. Their efforts generate rewards that are somewhat diminished, if still diverting. Quiver is releases this SXSW-premiered sequel to U.S. theaters, with home-formats dates as yet unannounced.
