The medals of a Crimean War soldier who lost three horses as he led a cavalry charge have been sold for more than £5,000. Troop Sergeant-Major William Stewart was galloping towards Russian lines at the Battle of Balaclava when his first horse was shot.
He mounted another animal whose rider had been killed but within seconds a shell exploded and the horse died. Stewart was then able to climb onto a third horse he found running loose.
But it was felled by a cannonball and had to be put down. Stewart then found a fourth horse to join the battle on October 25, 1854.
The Charge of the Heavy Brigade saw a force of 800 British cavalry rout a force of 3,000 Russian light horsemen in just eight minutes.
