Matt Cardle has accused shows like The X Factor and Love Island of "using people" and claimed the teams behind them only care about making good TV.
The singer, who won Simon Cowell's TV talent show in 2010, admits the TV industry has recently woken up to the need to protect contestants but he says it's "tricky" as producers are "are just trying to make good telly".
During an appearance on FUBAR Radio, Matt, 37, said things have changed since a series of tragedies rocked Love Island but there's always a risk for reality show stars.
He explained: "I think people are now starting to go, 'Look, there's a duty of care there'. "We all know what's happened with some of the people from Love Island and things like that.
