Christmas has wrongly become a retail festival. Instead of a joyous occasion, for many the season of goodwill causes unhappiness, debt and worry.
So say it loud, say it proud and say it NOW: “I won’t be buying you a present this year.” Many buy gifts for others that they know they won’t use, with money they don’t have, causing themselves stress they don’t need.
It may feel too soon to be discussing Christmas. But this conversation needs having now, before most people start buying gifts.
It won’t work to stop giving unilaterally, it must be done by consensus. We’ve disconnected from why we give gifts. Gift giving was once a form of social banking.
