Mark McGhee still has vivid memories of the night.But it’s only as the years pass that his appreciation of the achievement really hits home.
Such as when he was sent a picture from the famous trip to Sweden by his old Aberdeen assistant manager Archie Knox. It wasn’t a snap of the goals that sank Real Madrid from team-mates Eric Black or John Hewitt.
It wasn’t a pic of the celebrations with his jubilant team-mates. Or one of Sir Alex Ferguson or the joyous fans on the night.
It was taken in the hours before the 1983 European Cup-Winners Cup Final and featured four faces walking onto the Ullevi Stadium pitch.One of the lads in the picture was McGhee.
