Manchester United told Champions League hopes will dictate summer transfer strategy

Manchester United might not need to get into the Champions League to spend a lot of money on new players this summer. But Dr Dan Plumley, a football finance expert, has explained that not making it into Europe's elite competition will affect their budget for next season.

This is despite the fact that Sir Jim Ratcliffe said he would put £1.3billion into the club in December. Last season, Manchester United finished third in the Premier League, but this season they are having a harder time and are not in the places that would let them play in the Champions League next year.

They performed poorly in Europe this season, achieving only four points from six games. They couldn't spend money then because they had to follow the Premier League's rules regarding profit and sustainability. Dr Plumley thinks this won't stop United when the summer comes, no matter how they end up doing this season.
