Manchester United's Mason Greenwood granted bail ahead of attempted rape trial

Mason Greenwood has been granted bail following a private hearing after being charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.

The Manchester United forward appeared at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester after initially been remanded in custody on Monday.His case has been adjourned until November 21, when a pre-trial preparation hearing will be held.

The 21-year-old England international faces three charges, which are all in relation to the same alleged victim:Attempting to rape a woman on October 22, 2021Engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour between November 1, 2018 and October 15, 2022.Assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm between December 12 and 31, 2021The charges were brought against Greenwood on Saturday "after Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police," said Janet Potter, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS North West, on Saturday.Greenwood was re-arrested on Saturday following an allegation that he breached his bail conditions by contacting the alleged victim.

He spent Saturday and Sunday night behind bars, before a court appearance in which he was remanded in custody.Greenwood remains suspended by United “pending the outcome of the judicial process.” The club have previously said he is being paid his salary, in the range of £75,000-a-week, in full during the suspension.
