But recently this season, the defender could be considered a crucial player in Erik ten Hag’s side and their success. The England international had his captaincy taken away as his performances declined and his time at the club seemed to be at an end.
He attracted interest from West Ham over the summer and could have departed. Although David Moyes was keen on the England international, both sides struggled to agree on a deal and they ended up signing an alternative.
Down the pecking order, it seemed unlikely he would get the chance to prove his worth in the United starting XI, and he was initially not given many chances other than the final 23 minutes against Arsenal.
