Manchester United have confirmed that Ralf Rangnick will not be staying on in a planned consultancy role at the club following his period as interim manager.

Rangnick, 63, took charge of the club on an interim basis last December, initially only agreeing to the role if he was offered a future beyond his temporary spell in charge of the first team.

United had offered the German coach the chance to stay on in a two-year consultancy role in order to offer his expertise as they went forward under new manager Erik ten Hag. It is understood Ten Hag held a 'lengthy conversation' on the phone with Rangnick earlier in the week prior to his exit. “We would like to thank Ralf Rangnick for his efforts as interim manager over the past six months," a club statement read. “By mutual agreement, Ralf will now focus solely on his new role as manager of the Austria national team and will not therefore be taking up a consultancy role at Old Trafford. “We would like to wish Ralf the best of luck in this next chapter of his career.” Rangnick will now take charge of Austria for their upcoming Nations League fixtures, as they face Croatia, Denmark and France in Group A1.
